FJJA FAQ: Questions We Get the Most!
Are there any age restrictions?
Yes. Kids Jiu-Jitsu classes start at age 7 and we require a minimum of 14 years old (with permission from both a parent and by one of our instructors) to attend the any adult classes (including striking).
How do I get a uniform?
We sell starter uniforms (more commonly referred to as a gi) in the academy which also include a belt. You can bring a gi of your own, but it must be a standard IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi (no thin karate gis or materials that are not suited for BJJ).
How do I tie my belt?
This is the most common question I get from both kids and adults when they first begin. There are tons of ways to tie your belt, but here is the way we teach the “standard belt tie”.
Is there an initial sign up cost for adult memberships?
No. There are no upfront fees or costs other than monthly class dues. All memberships are for unlimited classes.
How do I sign my child up for classes?
Reach out to us by filling out the contact form on the main page of the website, message us on our social media pages, or contact us directly with a call or message. We start each child in an orientation program to give them the best chance to understand and succeed at Jiu-Jitsu!
Do I have to have previous experience in anything?
While it helps to be a 3-time D1 All-American wrestler, it isn’t required. Jiu-Jitsu is for anyone, but it isn’t for everyone. Our sport is one of failures and presents challenges to someone both physically and mentally. Not everyone starts Jiu-Jitsu with the same capabilities, but everyone starts with the same understanding of Jiu-Jitsu itself.
